A UVAM (Unità Virtuale Abilitata Mista) is a group of small generators and flexible loads capable to deliver flexibility services to the Italian transmission system operator; a UVAM participates in the market for dispatch services as a single virtual generator.
For an energy service company (ESCo), we designed an end-to-end solution for bidding, scheduling, dispatch and management of the generation and consumption sites that make up the UVAM.
Our main contribution consisted in designing and developing the software to optimally dispatch each asset belonging to the UVAM. Our work focused on modelling complex cogenerative and trigenerative sites with multiple technical and contractual constraints (on electricity, heat, hot and cold water, etc), as well as flexible consumption and multiple generation technologies. At its heart, a mixed-integer cost-minimizing algorithm ensures that the efficient dispatch is rapidly computed.
Further, we worked with the company’s data officer, development team and trading department to design the information flows and integrate our software in the company’s processes and IT systems.
